Mountaineer Lacrosse Close NAIA Play with Grit

AVE MARIA, Fla. – Eastern Oregon University Women's Lacrosse closed out its NAIA slate Thursday night, falling 23-4 to Ave Maria, but showcasing continued growth and resilience as the Mountaineers prepare for one final weekend of competition.

Eastern Oregon (0-10) faced an early deficit, but never backed down, continuing to fight and find opportunities throughout all four quarters. The Mountaineers showed improvement as the game progressed, building momentum offensively and creating more scoring chances in the second half.

Gemma Gonzales led the way for Eastern Oregon with two goals, continuing her strong presence on the attacking end. Grace Winebarger added a goal of her own while also contributing in the midfield with a team-high five draw controls. Alexa O'Callaghan found the back of the net as well, capitalizing on a player-up opportunity in the fourth quarter. Jade McCoy helped facilitate the offense, recording an assist while firing off a team-high five shots and generating multiple scoring chances.

Defensively, Eastern Oregon continued to battle, with Maddie Wicks logging a full 60 minutes in goal and tallying nine saves. The Mountaineers also saw solid efforts from players like Omdiderngul Skebong and Cozette Cooley, who contributed on the defensive end and in transition.

After being held scoreless in the opening quarter, Eastern Oregon responded with four goals over the final three periods, including a strong stretch in the third quarter where the Mountaineers netted two goals in quick succession. The late offensive push reflected the team's ability to adjust and compete, even against a tough opponent.

While this match-up marked the end of NAIA play for the Mountaineers, the season is not over yet. Eastern Oregon will return to the field April 11/12 in Bellingham, Washington, for an exhibition tournament, giving the team one final opportunity to compete together and build on the progress made throughout the year.

With a resilient mindset and continued development, the Mountaineers look to finish the season strong.
