Second Half Comeback Falls Short in 72-68 Loss at Northwest

KIRKLAND, Wash. – Trailing by 14 at halftime, the Eastern Oregon men's basketball team nearly pulled off a second half comeback but fell short 72-68 to Northwest University on Saturday night in Cascade Collegiate Conference action.

A tough first half ultimately doomed the Mountaineers (9-8, 3-5 CCC) on Saturday as the 14 point deficit was just too much to overcome. EOU pulled the game to within two points on multiple occasions, and one point with 5:21 to play, but could not tie or take the lead. After the Mounties got to within one point, the Eagles (11-5, 6-1 CCC) went on a 6-0 run that extended their lead to 68-61 with 2:21 left in the game.

The Mountaineers got the deficit back down to two points at 70-68 with 43 seconds to play, but the Eagles used the full shot clock on their next possession and scored a late basket to reclaim a two-score lead.

Senior Jarek Schetzle had another big game with 21 points, 13 rebounds and three blocks for a double-double. Junior Max McCullough had 17 points and senior Landon Jones also had a double-double with 16 points and 11 rebounds as the trio combined for all but 14 of the team's points.

Northwest's starting five all reached double figures on the night, led by Hussayn Ford with 18 points and 14 rebounds. Both teams made five three pointers and got to the free-throw line a combined 21 times in a clean played game.

The Mounties will be back on the road on Wednesday for the I-84 rivalry game at College of Idaho. Game time from Caldwell is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. Mountain time.
