Mountaineers Fall 67-58 to No. 3 Yotes in Defensive Battle

CALDWELL, Idaho – In the team's lowest overall scoring game of the season, the Eastern Oregon men's basketball team dropped a close defensive battle 67-58 to No. 3 College of Idaho on Wednesday night in Cascade Collegiate Conference action.

Sophomore Zane Wright hit a big three pointer with 2:17 to play to pull the Mountaineers (9-9, 3-6 CCC) to within three points at 58-55. The Yotes followed up with seven of the next eight points over the next 90 seconds to put the game away.

The game featured three lead changes and the largest lead of just nine points as the Mounties hung tough with the No. 3-ranked Coyotes who remained undefeated in the CCC (16-3, 9-0 CCC).

College of Idaho used its perennially strong defense to hold the Mountaineers to a season low 58 points and shooting percentage of .322. However, EOU answered with one its best defensive efforts of the season on the other side, limiting the Yotes to under 36 percent shooting and just 5-for-23 from behind the arc. Both teams shot over 70 percent from the free throw line with a combined 31 points from the charity stripe.

Senior Jarek Schetzle was the Mounties unstoppable force on the night, leading all players with 24 points and 17 rebounds. Seven of his rebounds were on the offensive end of the floor. Senior Landon Jones added 12 points and nine rebounds with three blocks while junior Max McCullough also had 12 points. Junior Jamal Heckard had five points and three assists.

The Mountaineers will have the weekend off before returning home for games on Jan. 24 against Oregon Tech and Jan. 25 against Southern Oregon.
