Schetzle Powers EOU to 83-80 Win at Evergreen

OLYMPIA, Wash. – The Eastern Oregon men's basketball team earned its third win in a row, defeating The Evergreen State College 83-80 behind an excellent game by senior Jarek Schetzle on Friday night on the road in Cascade Collegiate Conference action.

Schetzle finished with 29 points and 14 rebounds, shooting an extremely efficient 14-for-16 from the field on his way to his 10th double-double of the season. The senior helped lead the Mountaineers (9-7, 3-4 CCC) to an overall shooting percentage of 52.7 percent (29-for-55).

EOU was also efficient from behind the arc, making 9-of-18 deep-range shots. Junior Josh Brown went 3-for-5 on three's, including a clutch late three that kept Evergreen down by six points with under 40 seconds to play. Brown finished with 12 points.

Two other players reached double-digit scoring, including senior Landon Jones who had an all-around great game with 16 points, nine rebounds, seven assists and three steals. Junior Max McCullough also had 16 points, adding seven rebounds, five assists and three steals. Junior Jamal Heckard led the team with eight assists, contributing with seven points offensively.

After a close first half in which EOU led 46-43, the second half continued to be back-and-forth. EOU jumped ahead by 10 points 60-50 with 12:49 left to play. The Geoducks came all the way back and tied the score 69-69 with four minutes left. Up by three 76-73, Brown then hit his big three pointer as the shot clock expired and with a man in his face to extend the Mounties' lead back to six points and essentially put the game away.

The Mountaineers look to next run their winning streak to four games, visiting Northwest on Saturday at 7:39 p.m. in Kirkland, Washington.
