No. 10 Eastern Oregon Fends Off Beacons in 5 Sets

EUGENE, Ore. – Looking to maintain its unblemished record, the No. 10 Eastern Oregon volleyball team held off a pesky Northwest Christian squad in five sets (20-25, 25-15, 25-12, 20-25, 15-12) for the team's first Cascade Collegiate Conference of the season on Friday night.

After a rough first set in which the Beacons (8-2, 0-1 CCC) hit a remarkable .405, the Mountaineers (11-0, 1-0 CCC) considerably picked up their defensive effort. EOU forced 25 Beacon errors in the last four sets, holding NCU to a .138 hitting percentage for the match despite the first set. The Mounties finished with nine team blocks, but were hindered by 15 on the Beacons' side.

The Mountaineers dominated the second and third sets, outscoring NCU 50-27, looking well on their way to a four-set victory. The resilient Beacons answered back with a 25-20 fourth set win, limiting EOU to its lowest hitting percentage of the night at .111.

In the fifth set, the Mounties got out to a 6-2 lead thanks to two NCU errors and a block by senior Taylor Tibbetts and sophomore Cambree Scott. The Beacons pulled to within two points on multiple occasions, but the Mountaineers closed out the set and match 15-12 on a kill by sophomore Breanna Shaffer.

Shaffer continued to impress in her second season with the Mounties, recording a game-high 14 killsand a .343 hitting percentage. Senior All-American Megan Bunn was all-around spectacular, posting 13 kills, a team-high 26 digs, three block assists and one ace.

Also on the attack, sophomore Cambree Scott finished with 11 kills and seven block assists. Fellow sophomore Jet Taylor had nine kills and two blocks.

Two-time CCC Setter of the Week Madison Pilon recorded a career-high 47 assists, adding 17 digs and three service aces. Three-time reigning CCC Defender of the Week Kiley McMurtrey had 26 digs, while defender Aspen Christiansen had 13 and two aces.
