No. 8 Mountaineers Take Down No. 5 Raiders in 5 Sets

ASHLAND, Ore. – In an expected heavyweight bout between two top-10 programs, it was No. 8 Eastern Oregon that landed the knockout punch in a five-set thriller at No. 5 Southern Oregon on Saturday in Cascade Collegiate Conference play.

The Mountaineers (17-1, 7-1 CCC) crushed the first two sets, winning by scores of 25-18 and 25-17. EOU used its incredible up front presence of Cambree Scott, Taylor Tibbetts, Nina Bailey and Breanna Shaffer to control the block easily, while hitting .324 in the first two sets.

EOU looked well on its way to an easy sweep on the road, but the No. 5 Raiders proved their ranking over the third and fourth sets. Southern improved its play, reducing its errors and hit .182 and .279 to tie the match at 2-2.

Next, it was the Mounties chance to respond and they did just that in the fifth and final set. EOU jumped out to an 8-2 lead as the teams switched sides. Southern grabbed four points in a row and six of seven to pull within one point 9-8, but EOU proved its resilience again as they won five of the next six points. Up 14-11, Shaffer had the final kill to send Eastern Oregon home with its second top-five victory of the year.

Overall, the Blue and Gold finished with a 13-6 block advantage over the Raiders with a .191 hitting percentage to SOU's .133. EOU's effective serving, an 8-2 advantage, also earned them key points.

Senior Megan Bunn had a big night, leading all players with 17 kills. She also had 13 digs for a double-double and three block assists. Scott led the block with seven block assists, adding 11 kills. Shaffer posted 12 kills and five block assists. Bailey and Tibbetts added six and four blocks, respectively.

It was another outstanding night for junior setter Madison Pilon, who tied her career-high with 47 assists. She also had 16 digs for another double-double. Junior Kiley McMurtrey had 21 digs, freshman Sade Williams finished with 14 digs, five kills and three service aces, while junior Aspen Christiansen had 10 digs.

The win is EOU's sixth top-25 victory of the year and second in the top-5, previously beating then No. 3-ranked Grand View.

The Mounties are next home for four-straight matches at Quinn Coliseum, hosting Warner Pacific on Oct. 4 and Multnomah on Oct. 5.
