Rensburg’s Golden Goal Gives EOU 3-2 Victory Over Rival Yotes

CALDWELL, Idaho - In his first game as a Mountaineer, Dillon Van Rensburg was the hero that led the Blue and Gold to an overtime win against I-84 rivals College of Idaho, 3-2 Friday afternoon in conference play.

In a tough I-84 battle, the Eastern Oregon men's soccer team (3-4-1, 1-2 CCC) earned their first conference win of the season, defeating College of Idaho with a golden goal in the first overtime.

The Yotes (3-3-0, 1-2 CCC) took the lead early in the rivalry match through Ahmet Huremovic on an easy ball into the back of the net, putting them ahead 1-0.

The best chance of the half for EOU came with four minutes left. Midfielder Joaquin Bermejillo took a free kick and his ball connected with transfer Patrick Larsen's head. Parker Billings got a fingertip to the ball for the Yotes, forcing it over the cross bar and out for an EOU corner.

EOU came out firing after the break. After a great run through defenders, Bermejillo found Javier Moran who passed it off to senior Elvis Pavon who easily found the bottom right corner beyond Billings, leveling the score 1-1.

Soon after, COI regained the lead in the 60th minute. The Yotes put in a cross which hit the side post and rebounded back out to Huremovic, who volleyed the ball in for the second time on the afternoon, giving them the advantage 2-1.

However, this didn't dampen the Mountaineers' spirits as they continued to test the College of Idaho's defense. With 10 minutes left to play, the Mounties dug deep and got the equalizer. Patrick Larsen took one set up touch at the top of the 18 yard box and buried it past the keeper, keeping Eastern's hopes alive and forcing the game to OT.

It only took four minutes into overtime for the Mounties to put the game to bed. EOU drew a foul in the Yotes attacking third and defender Erik Mattice whipped a free kick into the mix where South African transfer Van Rensburg headed in the ball, sending home the Mounties with the overtime victory.

It was a very physical battle with 35 fouls between the two sides. Eastern Oregon maintained a 13-5 shot advantage with Larsen and Moran leading the team with three shots a piece.

The team will return home to Community Stadium next weekend October 4 and 5 to play Carroll College and Providence University.
