Eastern Oregon Men’s Soccer Loses 1-0 in Tight Contest

EUGENE, Ore. - The Eastern Oregon men's soccer team fell 1-0 to a late second half goal against Northwest Christian Friday afternoon in the team's Cascade Collegiate Conference opener.

The first half was evenly contested as both teams had their chances to score, but neither side could find the net. The Mountaineers (2-3-1, 0-1 CCC) held the advantage on shots at the end of the first half at 4-3. Carlos Solorio came close to hitting the back of the net when his shot late went just above the crossbar.

EOU was the better team in the second half with quite a few opportunities, but were just unable to capitalize in the final third. With 22 minutes left, the Mountaineers' best chance came when Calvin Mitchell put a square ball to Quentin Anderson, who sent it into a mix of players where Alexander Zuluaga slid in to get a touch, only to unfortunately find the cross bar again.

With the score still tied 0-0 through 87 minutes, the game looked certain to be heading to overtime. However, Northwest Christian (1-1, 1-0 CCC) received a free kick outside the 18-yard box, sending the ball in and finding Nicolas Schapochnik's head who put it in the back of the net to break the hearts of EOU.

The ball was mostly in the Mounties attacking third in the second half, with them pressuring the goal constantly. They out shot the Beacons 12-1 in the second period with the Beacons' one attempt resulting in their late goal. The team even had the advantage on corners 8-1, but were just unable to find the back of the net. Senior Elvis Pavon led the team in shots with six and three on goal.

The team will travel to Salem on Saturday to face Corban University at 3 p.m.
