Gregus, Cottrell Lead No. 14 Mounties over No. 10 Embry-Riddle

LA GRANDE, Ore. – In another top-25 battle, the No. 14 Eastern Oregon women's soccer team took down No. 10 Embry-Riddle for the second-straight year, 2-0 on Friday night at Community Stadium.

Reigning CCC Newcomer of the Year Mackinley Gregus led the Mountaineers (2-0-1) with both goals, her first two of the year. Her first came in the 28th minute as senior defender Josee Bassett joined the offensive attack, bringing the ball down to the end line before sliding it over to Gregus, who rocketed it into the far left corner.

Gregus found the net for the second time less than 15 minutes later. After a scramble in front of the net, the sophomore found it at her feet before putting the Mounties ahead 2-0.

The Eagles (1-1-1) dropped their first match of the year, but had plenty of their own scoring chances. Cydni Cottrell made sure none of those chances counted. The All-American goalkeeper made a couple top-notch saves, including a diving stop late in the first half. Cottrell made eight total saves as Embry-Riddle had an 8-6 lead in shots on goal.

Overall, the teams matched each other with 17 shots apiece. The Mounties led in corner kicks 4-1. Gregus led EOU with four shots while freshman Erika Skindlov had three. Both teams hit a number of posts that nearly could have been goals.

With two top-25 wins and another draw, EOU will finish its non-conference slate after over a week off. The Mountaineers next host No. 24 Hope International on Sep. 10 at 11 a.m.
