EOU Women's Soccer Rolls Past Hope International 6-0

LA GRANDE, Ore.- The No. 14 Eastern Oregon women's soccer team finished strong in its last non-conference match, defeating No. 24 Hope International 6-0 Tuesday morning at Community Stadium.

The Mountaineers put the ball in the back of the net six times during the top-25 battle, giving two players their first ever Mountaineer goals and two others their first of the season.

The first three goals came in the opening 45 minutes with freshman Erica Skindlov opening the flood gates, scoring her first career goal. Skindlov found some space outside the 18-yard box and sent the ball into the top right corner beyond the reach of Royals' goalkeeper Amber Vasconcellos.

All players got involved in the offense including reigning CCC Defender of the Year Josee Bassett. Some great Mountie pressure on the HIU goal led to a free kick where Bassett would step up to the plate. The senior struck the ball low and hard across the face of the goal as sophomore Mackinley Gregus ran towards the ball as if to receive it, yet she instead dummied over the ball to fake out the two defenders and keeper, allowing the ball to go into the back of the net untouched. Later, Bassett assisted Abri Cardenas with her first goal of the season, laying the ball off where Cardenas calmly passed it in.

The third goal was a display of some beautiful Mountaineer play between juniors Cailin Koupal and Morgan Farrington. Koupal, in her first game back from injury, took the ball down the sideline and crossed it into the box where Farrington was waiting, heading it home. Farrington opened up the scoring in the second half, scoring her second of the day when she got on the end of a Nan Kiebert through ball, beating the keeper one on one and slotting it in. Junior Katie Arnold scored her first goal as a Mountaineer, shooting past the keeper from close range, assisted by Farrington.

Senior goalkeeper Cydni Cotrell and her backline secured their third shutout of the year and were strong throughout the 90 minutes, allowing no shots on goal and only seven shots in total.

The team will begin conference play on September 20 in Eugene when they play Northwest Christian with a 3-0-1 record and a likely higher ranking. The first NAIA Top-25 poll is released on Wednesday.
