Mountaineers Leave Nebraska Undefeated with 2 More Top-25 Wins

HASTINGS, Neb. – It wasn't always easy, but the No. 10 Eastern Oregon volleyball team completed its first two weekends with a perfect 7-0 record and three top-25 wins, defeating No. 22 Bellevue in four sets (21-25, 25-21, 25-21, 25-20) and No. 14 Hastings in an epic five-set thriller (25-22, 15-25, 18-25, 30-28, 15-10) on Saturday at the Bill Marshall Volleyball Classic.

GAME 1 | #10 Eastern Oregon 3, #22 Bellevue 1

Sophomore Jet Taylor used a dominating net presence to post nine block assists as the Mountaineers (7-0) tallied 12 total blocks against the No. 22 Bruins. Four other Mounties also had at least two block assists.

After dropping the first set, EOU bounced back with three much stronger sets. The Bruins hit .217 in the opening set, but were then held under a .100 hitting percentage in the following three, with much due to the Mounties' improved front row.

Three players reached double-digit digs, with junior Kiley McMurtrey posting 15. Junior Madison Pilon had her sixth double-double in as many matches with 20 assists and 14 digs, while fellow junior Aspen Christiansen added 13 digs. Freshman setter Brooke Dodge also had a solid game setting, finishing with a career-best 15 assists.

EOU spread its attack around, led by senior Hailee Ackerman's nine kills along with three aces. Sophomore Breanna Shaffer had eight with four block assists, followed by senior Megan Bunn also with eight and fellow senior Taylor Tibbets with seven.

GAME 2 | #10 Eastern Oregon 3, #14 Hastings 2

The Mountaineers finished the weekend with their toughest match of the season thus far, needing a comeback to defeat the host Broncos on their home court.

Hastings won nearly every statistical category for the match, but the Mounties' poise and resilience proved their greatest attributes in the heavyweight bout. The Broncos had all of the momentum midway through the fourth set, leading 2-1 in the match and 23-21 late in the set.

The Blue and Gold answered with three-straight points to earn the first set point, but it was then Hastings' turn to answer. Christiansen made a great diving save on set point for EOU that was eventually finished by Shaffer to claim the set 30-28 in favor of the Mounties.

EOU used their momentum to get ahead early of the Broncos in the fifth, cruising to a 15-10 win to claim their seventh win and third against a top-25 opponent.

Bunn led the attack with 16 kills, while Shaffer had her best game of her young collegiate career, finishing with 14 kills and a .316 hitting percentage. Ackerman also had 12 kills, sophomore Cambree Scott and Taylor each added eight. Scott also led the team with six block assists.

McMurtrey posted 29 digs on defense, followed by Christiansen with 12 and freshman Sade Williams with 11. Pilon had a season-high 29 assists with nine digs.

The Mountaineers will take the momentum from the first two road trips to their final non-conference tournament before CCC play, playing at the C of I Labor Day Tournament in Caldwell, Idaho on Aug. 30 and 31. EOU will play Cardinal Stritch, No. 21 Providence and Hope International.
