No. 10 Mountaineers Sack Cardinal Stritch in Sweep

CALDWELL, Idaho - After their eighth-straight win over Cardinal Stritch University (0-1), the No. 10 Eastern Oregon volleyball team remained undefeated with a record of 8-0. The Mountaineers continued their momentum coming off of a very successful previous weekend, in which they defeated three ranked teams in Nebraska, to easily sweep Cardinal Stritch on Friday afternoon.

The No. 10 Mountaineers finished the Wolves in three straight games (25-14, 25-12, 25-16), dominating all statistical categories with a .325 hitting percentage, 34 digs, and 25 blocks while Cardinal Stritch sat at a .103 hitting percentage, 30 digs, and four blocks.

Coming out with the first two points in set one, the Wolves had the lead at 2-0 until junior setter Madison Pilon pushed a point of her own getting the Mountaineers on the board. Both teams continued to fight for each point early, tying eight different times in the first 11 points. At 11-11, the Wolves made two critical mistakes, allowing EOU to run away with the set. Earning the final kills of the set, the trio of sophomores Jet Taylor, Cambree Scott, and Breanna Shaffer finished the first set 25-14 for the Mountaineers.

Starting off at a better pace, EOU came out winning the first two points in set two. After a massive block from senior outside Megan Bunn and Taylor, the Mounties went up 2-0. The Wolves put up two of their own points tying it at 2-2, however, that would be the only time the entire match that the score would be tied. With kills from senior outside Hailee Ackerman, Scott, Shaffer, and Bunn, the score sat at 22-12. Shaffer ended the match with two more kills as EOU cruised to a 25-12 victory.

With two set wins under their belt, the Mountaineers weren't going to settle for anything but a sweep. Bunn started off the match with a kill while Pilon added on with a service ace after another Cardinal Stritch error. Taylor then came in with a kill making it 4-1. With several errors from the opposing Wolves, the Mountaineers kept inching towards the win at 10-5 and then 15-10, consistently keeping at least a five point lead. With a final kill by Taylor, the Mountaineers proved too much for the Wolves winning the final set 25-16.

Leading the team with eight kills apiece were Taylor and Shaffer who boasted .500 and .400 hitting percentages, respectively. Taylor also had eight block assists while Shaffer added five. Next was Bunn and Scott with seven kills each. Pilon paced the team in assists with 20. On the defensive side of the ball, junior libero Kiley McMurtrey had a team high of 12 digs. Pilon and McMurtrey each had three service aces.

EOU remains in Caldwell on Saturday, facing No. 21 Providence at 9 a.m. Mountain time and Hope International later that day at 5 p.m. MT to end the I-84 trip.
