EOU Selects Chris Thew to Lead Athletic Training Staff

LA GRANDE, Ore. – Chris Thew, a 2003 Eastern Oregon alum, has been hired as the head athletic trainer, assistant athletic director Stephanie Upshaw announced on Friday.
 
"We are excited to announce EOU Alumni, Chris Thew as our Head Athletic Trainer," said Upshaw. "Chris comes to EOU with over 12 years of experience.  Chris's ability to connect with student-athletes as a mentor and build relationships will help him be successful at EOU, and is in align with the University and Athletics core values."
 
Thew joins the Mountaineers after spending the past three years with NCAA Division II Western Oregon, where he was the associate athletic trainer working predominantly with football as well as cross country and track and field.
 
"I am thrilled to have the opportunity to return to the Grande Ronde Valley where I grew up, and to be apart of Eastern Oregon Athletics where my passion for sports medicine began," said Thew. "I look forward to joining an athletics staff that has worked hard to build a community where everyone works together to support the athletes both on and off the field."
 
Prior to his time at WOU, Thew was the head athletic trainer at Central Washington for a year. He was also the head trainer and a teacher at Eisenhower High School in Yakima from 2010-2016, also spending time at Kittitas Valley Physical Therapy and Ellensburg High School
 
We believe Chris will advance the care and prevention of injuries for EOU student-athletes, and bring creative techniques into his work.  We couldn't be more excited to welcome Chris and his family to the EOU Mountie team and look forward to working together to support student-athlete excellence.
 
Thew graduated from Eastern Oregon in 2003 with a Bachelor's degree in Physical Education and Health with an emphasis in Athletic Training. He then went to the University of Nebraska at Omaha where he received his Master's degree in Health Physical Education and Recreation in 2007 while working as a graduate assistant.
 
At EOU, Thew worked with football, volleyball, men's and women's basketball while assisting at Mountain Valley Therapy in La Grande. He will take over the head duties working with football at Eastern Oregon, along with other to-be determined sports.
