No. 9 EOU Defeats Rival SOU 73-72 in Regular Season Finale

ASHLAND, Ore. – The No. 9 Eastern Oregon women's basketball team bounced back from its first conference loss on Friday, to beating rival Southern Oregon 73-72 in the Cascade Collegiate Conference regular season finale.

The Mountaineers (25-3, 19-1 CCC) rebounded from Fridays tough loss against Oregon Tech in the final minute, to defeat Southern Oregon 73-72. EOU was led by two of the Mountaineers veteran guards in seniors Maya Ah You Dias and Maren Herrud. Ah You Dias and Herrud both finished the game with 17 points and were each 6-for-14 from the field. Ah you Dias almost tallied yet another double-double with nine rebounds. Herrud contributed on the board as well with seven rebounds of her own. Overall, EOU out rebounded Southern Oregon 43-32. Junior Jane Nelson added 10 points offensively

Similar with the loss against Oregon Tech, EOU struggled with holding onto the ball. Southern Oregon tallied over 13 steals, led by senior forward Ariel Augustine's 17 points and four rebounds. Junior Daranda Hinkey contributed with 14 points and three steals, while senior Destinee Jones also had 10 points, three steals, and two blocks.

The Mountaineers depth continued to show their value with their bench scoring 20 out of the 73 points. Freshman Beverly Slater had a strong game late, scoring nine points, adding seven rebounds while hiting three of her last four shots. Junior Whitney Meier also contributed to EOU's bench success, hitting two late three pointers, while junior Emma Logan ran the point, scoring five points with four rebounds and two assists. Southern Oregon's bench was held to only 10 points throughout the game.

With four minutes left to play, EOU had a nine point lead, 67-58 over Southern Oregon. The Raiders didn't back down, however, keeping the pressure on the Mountaineers' offense. In the final minute, Southern Oregon brought the game within one point, forcing EOU to hit late game free throws. Slater and Herrud both hit 1-of-2 to give the Mountaineers just enough to hold off SOU.

The Mountaineers will next host the quarterfinals of the Cascade Collegiate Conference Championships, presented by U.S. Bank, welcoming No. 8-seed Multnomah to Quinn Coliseum on Tuesday at 7 p.m. As the No. 1-seed, EOU will host all CCC rounds if they continue to win. Tuesday's game will be Taco Night, with $2 or 3 for $5 tacos from Raul's Taqueria in La Grande.
