May’s Late 3 Holds Off SOU 64-61 to End Regular Season

ASHLAND, Ore. – Leading nearly the entire game, the Eastern Oregon men's basketball team needed a clutch three-pointer from sophomore Jordan May with less than five seconds left to defeat rival Southern Oregon 64-61 on the road Saturday night in the Cascade Collegiate Conference regular season finale.

The Mountaineers (15-14, 10-8 CCC) led for over 37 minutes of Saturday's close battle, but the Raiders (19-9, 9-9 CCC) nearly pulled off the comeback win late. SOU tied the score for the first time in the second half with 24 seconds left on a three pointer, giving EOU the ball and a chance for the final possession.

Having hit a buzzer-beating three just eight days prior, May was poised for another game-winning shot. The Mounties ran off nearly 20 seconds before May drained a deep three, knowing the result well before it sank cleanly through the basket, while also sinking the hearts of the Raiders.

May overall had another strong night, posting 19 points with eight rebounds. Junior Jarek Schetzle was perhaps the most impactful player on the floor for both sides, finishing with a double-double of 16 points and 15 rebounds, adding six blocks. Schetzle was a monster on the offensive glass with eight offensive rebounds. His six blocks are also tied for the second most in a single game in program history.

EOU led by as many as 13 points in the game, but were unable to put away the Raiders, who put together a gutsy effort despite shooting nearly under 30 percent.

In the first half, EOU's defense gave SOU fits, holding the Raiders to just 20 points and 6-for-34 (17.6 %) shooting from the field. The Mounties were unable to completely take advantage, however, leading 26-20 at the break.

Both offenses picked up considerably in the second half, each shooting over 40 percent. EOU led for 19:41 of the second half, with the score tied for just the 19 seconds before May's game-winning shot.

Junior Landon Jones added 13 points and six rebounds in a strong game. Freshman Zane Wright had five points and seven rebounds.

For SOU, Jordan Hunt had a team-high 19 points and seven rebounds. Tristen Holmes posted 17 points and seven boards, followed by Teron Bradford with 10 points and seven rebounds.

Entering the game, EOU could finish anywhere from fourth place to sixth place in the CCC. Northwest Christian defeated Corban in double overtime, solidifying the Mountaineers as the No. 5 seed for the CCC Championships, presented by U.S. Bank. The Mounties will visit No. 4 seed Corban on Wednesday at 7 p.m. in Salem, Oregon.
