Mountaineers Held Off 80-75 by Corban in CCC Quarterfinals

SALEM, Ore. – The Eastern Oregon men's basketball team battled in a close road contest, but ultimately fell 80-75 against Corban in the quarterfinals of the Cascade Collegiate Conference Championships, presented by U.S. Bank, on Wednesday night.

A game that featured numerous runs and swings back-and-forth eventually settled in favor of the Warriors, who move onto the semifinals and will host No. 6-seed Southern Oregon on Saturday. However, the Mountaineers (15-15) had the momentum late and pulled to within three points.

On effectively EOU's final possession, the Mounties got the ball with 17 seconds left after a timeout. Setting up a potential three-point shot to tie the game, EOU was unable to connect on the first attempt, but an offensive rebound by sophomore Peter Hamilton opened the door for another chance. Unfortunately, the inbound pass deflected out of bounds of the Mountaineers with one second left, and the Warriors capitalize on their free throws to ice the game.

With the score tied 40-40 at halftime, Corban went on a 17-6 run over the first seven minutes to take a game-high 11 point lead. Senior Said Hersi pulled the Mounties within three points on a three pointer and layup to make the score 59-56.

After Corban re-extended its lead to eight points, sophomore Jordan May found his stride with EOU's next 10 points, making four free throws along the way to tie the score at 66 with 6:56 to play. Once again, however, the Warriors went on another long run of nine points to go ahead 75-66 with 2:52 left in the game.

Big three pointers by redshirt freshman Kobi Gardea, Hersi and Hamilton brought the Mounties back within one point with 34 seconds left. After the Warriors made both free throws, it set up EOU's final possession with a chance to tie the game.

In the first half, the Mountaineers got off to a slow start, falling behind 22-14 at the first media timeout. However, EOU responded with a 13-0 run to jump ahead 27-22, led by six points from sophomore Brock Johnson during the span. Before the half ended, Hamilton knocked down a three with just seconds remaining to tie the score 40-40 after 20 minutes.

May led the offense with 18 points, making 8-of-9 free throws, adding three steals. Entering the game with 991 points, May became the youngest player in EOU history to reach 1,000 points in his career at just 19 years old, and the quickest to do so, needing only 56 career games.

Sophomore Peter Hamilton had a career-high 14 points, shooting 6-for-13 with five rebounds in 32 minutes. Hamilton stepped up big as two starters in juniors Landon Jones and Jarek Schetzle were limited due to foul trouble.

Jones, Gardea and freshman Zane Wright each had eight points. Gardea led the team with six assists while Jones paced EOU with six boards. Hersi had five points while fellow senior Peter Eke had four points, four rebounds and two steals in perhaps their final collegiate games.

Corban was led by 19 points from AJ Hodges and 15 points and 10 rebounds by Joel Johnson.

The Mountaineers' season likely ends on Wednesday, finishing with a 15-15 overall record. Season highlights include an 83-77 home win over No. 13 Southern Oregon, along with two game-winning three pointers by May within an eight day span.
