Oregon Tech Upsets No. 9 EOU, Snap 24-Game Win Streak

KLAMATH FALLS, Ore. – Oregon Tech upsets the No. 9 Eastern Oregon women's basketball team 74-69, ending their 24-game win streak in a Cascade Collegiate Conference game on Friday night.

The Mountaineers (24-3, 18-1 CCC) received their first loss during conference play this season, falling in a close battle at Oregon Tech. Entering the game, EOU averaged over nine three-pointers per game, while shooting over 38 percent. However, the Owls' tough defense limited the Mountaineers to just 1-for-11 from behind the arc on the night.

During the first half, both teams struggled with holding onto the ball. EOU and OIT combined for 23 turnovers in the first half. Unlike Oregon Tech, EOU turned some of their opponent's mistakes into points, scoring eight points in the first half off turnovers.

The key to the Mountaineers success in holding their first half lead was due to their bench. In the first half, EOU's bench scored 17 of their 35 points led by junior Emma Logan, compared to OIT's 11 bench points.

Senior Maya Ah You Dias led the Mountaineers in scoring with 18 points. But, it seemed it wasn't enough to hold of OIT. The Owls denied Ah You Dias the ball every chance they could, which forced Ah You Dias to help create shots for others with her passing, tallying a team high six assists and six rebounds.

The second half was similar to the first, with the Mountaineers tallying over 22 turnovers in the game. Unlike the first half, OIT turned those turnovers in to points with 12, eight of those being fast break points. Sophomore Abby Kreiser led Oregon Tech with 16 points, five rebounds, three steals, and a perfect 6-for-6 from the free-throw line.

EOU down the stretch continued to go to the hot hand in senior Maren Herrud. Herrud kept the Mountaineers close with her 14 points, 2 steals, and her 5-for-5 shooting from the free-throw line. Senior Julia Hanni also contributed with 14 points, four rebounds, and two steals.

In the final two minutes of the game, the Mountaineers couldn't seem to hit a shot due to the Owl's swarming defense. With 1:17 left in the fourth quarter, OIT gained its biggest lead of the night with six points, giving EOU its first conference loss of the season. The loss ends the Mounties' 24-game winning streak, as well as the team's 48-game conference regular season winning streak, dating back to Jan. 15, 2017 at OIT once again.

The Mountaineers will look to rebound at Southern Oregon (16-9, 12-7 CCC) on Saturday at 5:30 p.m. in Ashland.
