Men’s Basketball Suffers Overtime Loss at SOU

ASHLAND, Ore. – The Eastern Oregon men's basketball suffered a late second half comeback by Southern Oregon, eventually falling 107-96 in overtime on the road in Cascade Collegiate Conference play on Friday night.

The Mountaineers (7-5, 1-2 CCC) led 50-35 after the first half thanks to a strong shooting performance that included 8-for-14 from behind the arc. EOU was also able to hold the Raiders (8-3, 2-1) to just 3-for-16 on three's as well, creating the Mounties' 15 point lead heading into the locker room.

Momentum reversed in the second half as SOU went on an incredible shooting performance, making 60 percent of their field goals and 8-of-13 on three's. The Mounties made 44 percent of their shots and 13-of-15 free throws, but the Raiders' late three-point shooting allowed them to tie it. With just 12 seconds left, SOU's Teron Bradford hit a three pointer to tie the game 89-89, sending the game to overtime.

In the overtime period, the Raiders scored the first eight points over two minutes, creating a lead that proved to be insurmountable. EOU pulled to within six points on two occasions after Max McCullough and Landon Jones each made a pair of free throws, but the Mounties would not get any closer.

EOU shot a strong 80 percent from the free throw line on 24-for-30 shooting for the game. On the other side, SOU outrebounded EOU 51-37 and held a 50-38 advantage in points in the paint.

McCullough paced the team with 20 points and seven assists. He also made 10-of-11 free throws. Senior Jarek Schetzle had a double-double with 18 points and 10 rebounds. Junior Jamal Heckard had 17 points in 41 minutes played, while junior Josh Brown added 13 points, five rebounds and four assists. Junior Brandon Porter also had 11 points off the bench.

The EOU defense had a touch time stopping SOU's Tate Hoffman, who went off for 31 points and 10 rebounds. Aaron Borich had 22 points as the team's top three-point threat.

The Mountaineers are back in action on Saturday night, visiting Oregon Tech in Klamath Falls, Oregon at 5:30 p.m.
