Mountaineers Fall at No. 2 Oregon Tech 107-94

KLAMATH FALLS, Ore. – Holding onto a one-point lead at halftime, the Eastern Oregon men's basketball team saw its lead fade at No. 2 Oregon Tech, falling 107-94 on Saturday night in Cascade Collegiate Conference play.

The Mountaineers (7-6, 1-3 CCC) played a very strong first 15 minutes of the game, leading 43-30 with5:29 to play after a Jarek Schetzle made layup. The Owls (12-2, 2-2 CCC) outscored EOU 18-6 over the final stretch of the half to cut the Mounties' lead to 49-48 as the teams headed to the locker room. EOU used a good shooting half of 58.8 percent while making 6-of-9 three pointers to hold the one-point advantage.

In the second half, the Owls showed why they were the national runners-up a year ago and ranked No. 2 in the latest NAIA ranking as they outscored EOU 59-45. OIT held the Mounties to 1-for-9 from long range in the half while shooting 52 percent from the floor and making 14 free throws. A high percentage of EOU's points in the second half came from the charity stripe as they made a strong 20-of-22 from the free throw line, but it was not enough as OIT's offense hit its stride.

Schetzle led the Mounties with 28 points and 14 rebounds, going off in the second half with 19 points and seven boards. He shot 10-for-13 overall and made 8-of-10 free throws. Newcomer Jamal Heckard had 21 points, six assists and three steals in a time-high 39 minutes. Junior Josh Brown had 17 points and sophomore Zane Wright added 10. EOU made 50 percent of their field goals and 88.5 percent of their free throws.

The Owls used their depth of scoring for the big offensive output, with six players reaching double-digits. Kaison Faust had a team-high 22 points, with eight rebounds off the bench. Seth Erickson had 19 points and reigning CCC Player of the Year Mitchell Fink had 14 points and 17 assists.

The Mounties will next be on the road for an exhibition matchup at Utah State on Dec. 28 at 2 p.m. Mountain Time in Logan, Utah. They then return to CCC action after the New Year, hosting Northwest Christian on Jan. 3 and Corban on Jan. 4.
