Mountaineers Finish 2-1 at CCC/GPAC Duals

PRESCOTT, Ariz. – The Eastern Oregon men's wrestling team finished with two wins at the annual CCC/GPAC duals on Sunday, earning victories over Arizona Christian and Morningside (Iowa).

The Mountaineers (8-3) started the afternoon with its toughest dual of the day, facing No. 7 Southeastern. After falling behind 9-0 to the fire, senior Blake McNall scored six points with a pin. Southeastern won the next two matches to go ahead 16-6.

Junior Josh Pine then defeated No. 16-ranked Stephen Kelle by technical fall and sophomore Keegan Mulhill won 6-0 over No. 11 Coleman Bryant to pull the deficit to 16-14. After another Fire win, sophomore Ryan Redford pinned his opponent to give the Mounties a 20-19 lead with one match remaining. In a close heavyweight bout, the Fire were able to take the match 2-0 and the dual 22-20.

EOU then rebounded with a dominant 27-10 win over Arizona Christian in the team's second dual. The Firestorm won three of the first four matches to go ahead 10-3, but the Mounties won six in a row to end the dual. John Bittinger earned a 7-5 decision, followed by a pin by Pine to make the score 12-10 in EOU's favor. Mulhill won by major decision 16-3, junior Marco Retano earned a technical fall victory, Redford won 6-4 and Cade Woodward finished the dual with a 4-2 victory.

The Mountaineers finished the day with a close 27-25 victory over Morningside, who was also receiving votes in the NAIA poll like EOU. The two teams wrestled in just seven matches in the dual with three forfeits. EOU went up 6-0 on a forfeit at 125 pounds, but the Mustangs answered with a pin to tie the score. McNall won by a 16-8 major decision, but once again Morningside won its next two matches to take a 13-10 lead.

Next game the Mounties' strongest part of their lineup as Pine won by a first round fall, Mulhill by a 16-0 technical fall and Retano also by pin to jump EOU ahead 27-13. The Blue and Gold forfeited their final two rounds, but still won the dual 27-25.

The Mountaineers next wrestle after the New Year at home against Big Bend Community College on Jan. 11 at 6 p.m. at Quinn Coliseum.
