Mountaineers Clinch Share of CCC Title With Win Over Warner Pacific

PORTLAND, Ore.- The No. 4 Eastern Oregon women's volleyball team earned a share of its second-straight Cascade Collegiate Conference regular season title, winning their final conference match of the season against Warner Pacific in four sets (25-10, 22-25, 27-25, 25-19), Saturday night in CCC play.

With this final win of the CCC season, the Mountaineers (28-2, 18-2 CCC) shared the regular season conference title with Southern Oregon for the second year in a row and enter the conference tournament as the second seed overall due to SOU owning the tiebreaker. The conference title is the fifth overall in program history, all occurring within the last six seasons since 2014.

Leading the Mountaineers' .225 hitting percentage was senior outside hitter Megan Bunn, who recorded 13 kills as well as 13 digs. Sophomore middle hitter Jet Taylor was close behind with 12 kills and sophomore outside hitter Breanna Shaffer tallied eight. Madison Pilon had a team high of 37 assists and for the EOU defense, Kiley McMurtrey managed 20 digs.

EOU led the entire first set, pushing ahead within the first two points at 2-0. The Mountaineers never let up in the first set, leading by more than 10 points at 19-7 after multiple Knight errors, easily taking the set 25-10.

The second set proved to be more of an even match up as the Knights came out with more vigor and competitiveness. After a Mountaineer lead of 9-5, the Knights began to capitalize on EOU errors and earn some kills of their own. Coming back in the game and tying it up at 17-17, the Knights put pressure on the Mountaineers, causing a few more EOU errors. Leading at 22-18, the Knights tallied two kills to bring up set point. With another Warner kill, the Knights took the second set 25-22.

The third set was a battle for both teams, with each one fighting for a lead of more than five points. EOU finally took a five point lead at 11-6, but the Knights tied it back up at 13-13 and then again at 20-20. With another tying score at 24-24 the Mountaineers knew they were going to have to play with intensity and efficiency. Putting the pressure on WPU, EOU caused two Knight errors and won an exciting third set 27-25.

With the chance to get the win in the fourth set, the Mountaineers' offense and defense started to work in unison. Pushing points early, EOU took the first four points making it 4-0. The Mountaineers later extended their lead to 17-10. Fighting to end it in four, the Mountaineers made it to 20 points first while the Knights sat at only 12. EOU snagged the fourth set win 25-19 and celebrated their conference championship.

For the Knights, Grace Buchanan lead the match with 15 kills while Haley Yoder had eight. Matalasi Laban collected 27 assists and Mercedes Massey amassed 31 digs.

The Mountaineers will await thier next opponent at the CCC Championships. The quarterfinal round will be played on Tuesday while EOU awaits the highest remaining seed for a matchup on November 15 at 2:30 p.m. in Ashland, Oregon.
