No. 4 EOU Volleyball Sweeps Corban in Semifinals of CCC Tournament

ASHLAND, Ore. - The No. 4 Eastern Oregon women's volleyball team had a clean sweep in the semifinal round of the Cascade Collegiate Conference Championships, presented by U.S. Bank, against No. 13 Corban in three sets (25-22, 25-16, 25-20) Friday night.

With the win, the Mountaineers (29-2) move onto the tournament championship against host Southern Oregon for the second year in a row. By facing the Raiders, EOU earns the CCC's second automatic qualfier to nationals, reaching the tourney officially for the sixth year in a row.

The Mountaineers also faced the Raiders in the 2018 CCC tournament championship in Ashland, where SOU won in four sets. This will be EOU's fourth appearance in the tournament finals.

Making a statement and never letting the Warriors lead by more than two points the entire game, the Mountaineers hit .198 to the Warriors -.041, with most of Corban's offense in the negatives. With 40 total kills, 16 more kills than the Warriors, the EOU offense was led by senior outside hitter and All-CCC selection Megan Bunn who recorded 11 kills and five blocks, while sophomore All-CCC middle blocker Cambree Scott collected eight kills and six blocks. All-CCC honorable mention Jet Taylor added seven kills and three blocks. Leading the match in assists was junior All-CCC setter Madison Pilon who amassed 36 assists and CCC Libero of the Year Kiley McMurtrey performed well again on defense, tallying 20 digs.

In the first set, the Mountaineers promptly took the first three points 3-0, getting no answer from the Warriors. Finally, Corban got on the board after a single kill and proceeded to tie it back up at 4-4. Going back and forth until 7-7, the Mountaineers took control gaining three straight points to take back their three point lead. Up 10-7, EOU pushed ten more points to make it 20-16. Increasing their lead until game point at 24-18, EOU fought off a late set comeback from the Warriors as they went on a five-point run putting them within two at 24-22. After an attack error from Corban, Eastern took the first set 25-22.

With one set under their belt, EOU continued onto the second set with solid offensive and defensive efforts, leading by five at 10-5. EOU was making it look easy, increasing their lead to seven at 15-8 after back-to-back Warrior errors. It was clear that EOU had found its rhythm taking a ten point lead, the highest for the entire match, at set point 24-14. After two attacking errors by the Mountaineers, Shaffer finished the set with a kill to end it 25-16.

Looking for the sweep, EOU used their 2-0 confidence to side out quickly and collect points. Although tied at 5-5, that would be the only instance when both teams would be on level playing field. EOU would have the lead for the rest of the match. After a kill from Bunn making it 16-9, the Mountaineers rolled through the rest of the match easily, winning the final set 25-20 after two back-to-back kills from Taylor.

On the Corban side, Avari Ridgeway led the team with six kills. Sarena Bartley collected five kills of her own as well as one block. Jadyn Mullen had a team high of 14 assists and Kealani Ontai paced the defense with 18 digs.

The Mountaineers play in the CCC Tournament Finals Saturday against the host team and No. 1 seed Southern Oregon at 3:30 p.m. in Ashland.
