Mountaineers Fall in CCC Tournament Finals to SOU

ASHLAND, Ore.- The Eastern Oregon women's volleyball team suffered a three set loss, 25-12, 25-22, 25-18, in the finals of the Cascade Colligate Conference Championships, presented by U.S. Bank, against Southern Oregon (29-3, 18-2 CCC) Saturday night SOU's home court.

Despite the loss, the Mountaineers (29-3) earned the conference's second auto-qualifier to nationals, but were highly likely to receive an at-large bid regardless as the No. 4-ranked team in the NAIA.

Sophomore middle blocker Cambree Scott led the EOU offense having a team high of nine kills and a hitting percentage of .333. Fellow sophomore middle blocker Jet Taylor tallied the next highest kill count with six as well as one block. Junior setter Madison Pilon totaled 25 assists, a high for both teams, and junior libero Kiley McMurtrey managed 16 digs while junior defensive specialist Aspen Christiansen collected 11 of her own.

The home court advantage seemed to be working for the Raiders as they went on a four point run at 1-1 in the first set reaching five points first at 5-1. Struggling to get going, Eastern lagged in pushing points while SOU continued to go on runs, eventually taking a ten point lead at 19-9. EOU earned just three more points in the match when SOU finished the first set with a win 25-12.

The second set was kicked off by the Mountaineers, who earned four kills in the first five points from Scott, Taylor, and senior right side hitter Taylor Tibbetts making it 5-3 EOU. Continuing on their run, the Mountaineers had their biggest lead of the whole match at 10-5. However, the Raiders had another agenda and tied it back up at 15-15 after a kill by senior CCC Player of the Year Taylor Ristvedt. Taking a two point lead after another kill and an EOU hitting error, SOU was back in the match. The score was tied again at 19-19 but, the Raiders went on another unanswered five-point run to reach match point first. After two back-to-back kills from Scott and a SOU hitting error putting EOU within two points, SOU finally ended the set 25-22.

The third and final set was EOU's last chance to create some momentum, however, they trailed early at 5-3. Still behind 11-8, SOU pushed five quick points to increase their lead to eight making it 16-8 Raiders. Trying their best to make a come back, EOU came close within five points at 20-15, but SOU earned their final five points from an EOU error and four Raider kills to take the championship match in three sets.

For Southern Oregon, Taylor Ristvedt tallied a match and team high of ten kills and nine blocks while Elliot Cook earned nine kills and five blocks. The two setters, Hannah Bogatin and Tehani Faitau recorded 24 and 17 kills respectively. On defense, Emma Ryan led the team in digs with 19.

The Mountaineers will await their next opponents at the NAIA Championships, with the selection show on Monday at 8 a.m. Pacific time.
