Women’s Soccer Advances to Semis with 1-0 Win over Carroll

SPRINGFIELD, Ore. – It took nearly 67 minutes of offensive pressure, but the Eastern Oregon women's soccer team's relentless attack finally paid off on Kaitlyn McLeod's game-winning goal as the Mountaineers defeated Carroll College 1-0 in the quarterfinals of the Cascade College Conference Championships, presented by U.S. Bank on Tuesday night.

The Mountaineers (13-2-2) peppered the Carroll net all night, outshooting the Saints 22-8 and 13-3 in shots on goal for the evening. However, Carroll's Sydney Green stood up strong with eight saves, frustrating the EOU attack.

With the offense picking up even more steam in the second half, a ball sent in by junior Cailin Koupal deflected off of McLeod and into the back of the net to give the Mounties the crucial goal with under 25 minutes to play.

The EOU attack did not stop there and continued to put pressure on Carroll's defense, not allowing the Saints to put together any sustained offense on the other end.

The Saint did have a few chances late in the game, but goalkeeper Savannah Hutchinson was there every time, keeping a clean sheet and the shutout intact. Hutchinson posted three saves in the victory.

Senior Nan Kiebert led the attack with five shots, including two on goal. Junior Camie Edgington and sophomore Mackinley Gregus each had four shots while Koupal finished with three and the game-winning assist.

With an upset on Tuesday by No. 8-seed Corban over No. 1-seed Oregon Tech, the Mountaineers will now take on the Warriors in the semifinals. Match time for a chance to reach the finals for a third consecutive year is scheduled for 7 p.m.
