Men’s Soccer Throttles Walla Walla 6-0

COLLEGE PLACE, Wash. – The Eastern Oregon men's soccer team snapped a three-game losing skid and got back in the win column on Sunday afternoon with a dominant 6-0 victory over Walla Walla in Cascade Collegiate Conference play.

The Mountaineers (5-8-1, 3-6-0) controlled the play from start to finish, outshooting the Wolves 36-3 and 19-3 in shots on goal. EOU scored three goals in each half as they kept the pressure on the WWU defense throughout the afternoon.

EOU jumped out to an early lead in the ninth minute as Erik Mattice scored the goal off a corner kick that deflected off a Wolf defender into the net.

Just before halftime and the score still 1-0, the Mounties scored two goals in quick succession. Junior Joaquin Bermejillo had the team's second goal late in the 44th minute after dribbling through a few defenders. Then just over a minute later and right before the halftime buzzer, Felipe Madero buried one in the top-left corner of the net to make the score 3-0, as he was assisted by Alex Gutierrez.

Junior Javier Moran continued where the Mounties left off after the first half, scoring the team's fourth goal in the 52nd minute after receiving a cross from Mattice. Just five minutes later, junior Calvin Mitchell scored the team's fifth goal, assisted by Moran. In the 63rd minute, Moran finished EOU's scoring with his second of the game after a low cross by senior Elvis Pavon.

Goalkeepers Max Rose and Antonio Gracia combined for the shutout, making one save combined. The defense allowed just one corner kick, while the offense setup six throughout the day.

The Mountaineers get set for the final stretch of games, with the last four regular season matches at home. EOU next hosts Northwest on Friday at 4 p.m., followed by Evergreen on Saturday at 4 p.m.
