Two First Half Goals Seal Victory over Northwest 2-1

LA GRANDE Ore. - The Eastern Oregon men's soccer team seniors led the way to a 2-1 victory over Northwest University on Friday. The two first half goals were enough to hold off the Eagles in Cascade Collegiate Conference play.

The Mountaineers, determined to keep their postseason hopes alive, came out firing, peppering the northwest goal early. It didn't take long for EOU (6-8-1, 4-6-0 CCC) to strike. The first goal came from senior captain Jorge Chavez when he capitalized on a loose ball in the six-yard box off of his own initial shot, cracking it into the back of the net.

14 minutes later, senior Oscar Munoz doubled the lead. Erik Mattice teamed up with Munoz for his third assist of the year, sending a free kick in. Eagle goal keeper Alexander Thiehofe spilled the kick and Munoz was there to clean it up.

The Mountaineers' opening 45 minutes was full of chances, outshooting the Eagles (7-7-1, 4-5-1 CCC) 9 to 3 with the upper hand in corners as well at 8-0.

Northwest put the pressure on early in the second half, closing the gap to 2-1 just 10 minutes in. Gian Herrera took a shot 25-yards out to beat keeper Max Rose. Despite conceding the early goal, the Mounties were able to hold onto their lead and finish the game out, securing the victory.

The Mounties will play again Saturday at Community Stadium against Evergreen College at 4 p.m.
