No. 5 Mountaineers Win 10th In a Row, Advance to 21-1

LA GRANDE, Ore. – Despite a slow start, the No. 5 Eastern Oregon volleyball team extended its winning streak to 10 games, defeating Northwest Christian in four sets (20-25, 25-18, 25-21, 25-10) to sit alone atop the Cascade Collegiate Conference on Saturday afternoon.

The Mountaineers (21-1, 11-1 CCC) lost the opening set by a 25-20 score, hitting just .079 with nine kills to six errors. After that point, however, it was all EOU. The block and defensive back row picked up their play, holding NCU under a .100 hitting percentage in the last three sets.

The Blue and Gold totaled 13 blocks in the match, led by sophomore Cambree Scott's nine assisted blocks. Senior Megan Bunn and sophomore Jet Taylor each had five, while sophomore Breanna Shaffer added four. Bunn led the attack with 12 kills, followed by Scott and Shaffer with 11 apiece.

The back row played a key roll with many diving saves, paced by junior Kiley McMurtrey's 23 digs. Fellow junior Aspen Christiansen added 14 and Bunn finished with 12 for a double-double. Junior Madison Pilon had 37 of the team's 46 assists.

The Mountaineers have now beaten every team in the CCC at least once, running a full lap through the conference since their last loss on Sep. 7.

The Beacons, who were coming off an exhilarating road win over ranked College of Idaho the night before, finished with an impressive 12 team blocks. Claire Salness and Natalie Downes each had eight kills. Downes finished with eight total blocks. Kayla Olson finished with 25 digs and Makenna Northern posted 32 assists.

The Mountaineers will play a home and road match next week. EOU will visit rival College of Idaho on Friday at 7 p.m. Mountain time, followed by a Saturday matchup with Walla Walla at 7 p.m.
