No. 5 Mounties Sweep Yotes for 2nd Time in 2019

CALDWELL, Idaho – In the second I-84 bout of the year, the No. 5 Eastern Oregon volleyball team made it an easy competition, sweeping No. 23 College of Idaho (25-23, 25-19, 25-18) for the second time in a row on Thursday night in Cascade Collegiate Conference play.

The Mountaineers (22-1, 12-1 CCC) advanced their winning streak to 11-straight matches, cruising to the sweep of the Yotes (13-7, 8-5). After a tight first set, the Mounties were able to roll to the victory with wins by six and seven points.

EOU came out of the gates a bit slow, falling behind 8-4. Four-straight points for the Mounties then tied the score at eight apiece. Both teams traded points until C of I jumped ahead 20-17 late. EOU once again responded with three points in a row to tie up the score once again. After the Yotes took a 23-21 lead, the Mountaineers scored four-straight points that included combined blocks by sophomores Jet Taylor and Breanna Shaffer and then Taylor and senior Taylor Tibbetts to end the set.

The second and third sets went smoother for the Mounties, hitting over .200 in each while limiting the Yotes under .170.

C of I finished with 20 team errors, many of which were forced by EOU's 10 blocks. The Mounties held an advantage in kills, blocks and aces in the match.

Senior Megan Bunn and sophomore Cambree Scott each posted 11 kills to lead the Mounties attack. Scott hit .417 with just one error, adding four block assists. Bunn had a double-double with 11 digs, also finishing with four block assists. Taylor had seven kills and a team-high six blocks.

Junior libero Kiley McMurtrey had a team-best 16 digs, while fellow junior Aspen Christiansen had 10. Junior Madison Pilon led all players with 38 assists.

The Mountaineers will bring their 11 match winning streak back home to host Walla Walla on Saturday at 7 p.m. at Quinn Coliseum.
