Mountaineers Nearly Pull Off Comeback vs. No. 4 Yotes

LA GRANDE, Ore. – Down 12 points with 1:53 to play, the Eastern Oregon men's basketball team cut the deficit to one possession, nearly pulling off a miraculous comeback against No. 4 College of Idaho, eventually falling 71-66 on Tuesday night in Cascade Collegiate Conference play.

Sophomore Peter Hamilton started the comeback with a three-point play, knocking down a jumper and connecting on the free throw, cutting the deficit to 69-60 with 1:39 to play. Then on the defensive end, Hamilton drew an offensive foul to give the Mounties the ball back.

On the next defensive possession, senior Said Hersi drew a quick steal, resulting in a Jordan May three pointer after Zane Wright's offensive rebound to cut the deficit to six.

EOU the fouled the Yotes on the next possession, setting up a 1-and-1 for Matt Meyers, who missed his first attempt. The Mounties missed the next three, but once again got a C of I free throw miss with 14 seconds. Hersi then connected on a deep three pointer with eight seconds to play.

Again, the Mountie defense came up big as Hersi forced his second gigantic steal with five seconds to give EOU a final chance at tying the game. However, May's three point attempt rimmed out and the Yotes made their final free throws to close out the ball game.

May and junior Jarek Schetzle led the team with 15 points. Schetzle also had six boards and three blocks. Junior Brock Johnson had 11 points, shooting 4-for-4 while going 3-for-3 from behind the arc. Junior Landon Jones posted five points, eight rebounds and six assists in an all around game.

Both teams were limited on their perimeter shooting, with EOU making 8-for-25 while the Yotes went 11-for-38 for just 29 percent. C of I's biggest advantage came on the boards, finishing with a 48-34 lead.

The Yotes were led by a double-double of 15 points and 10 rebounds by Nate Bruneel. Talon Pinckney posted 15 points, seven assists and six boards. Gibson Berryhill had 13 points and four rebounds while Matt Meyers had eight points and 14 rebounds.

The Mountaineers have the week off as they will earn forfeit victories against Walla Walla. The team next plays in Kirkland, Washington on Feb. 1 against Northwest.
