EOU Men’s Basketball Loses Close Battle to Northwest

KIRKLAND, Wash.- The Eastern Oregon men's basketball team (12-12, 7-6 CCC) fell on the road to Northwest University (12-14, 4-10 CCC) 86-76 Friday night in Cascade Collegiate Conference play.

The first time the two teams met this season in La Grande, EOU came out on top with an 84-79 victory. However, Northwest led the entire game on Friday and, despite a late second half comeback by the Mountaineers, the Eagles pulled out the 86-76 win.

The Mountaineers made 46 percent of their shots, however NU held them to 8-for-32 from beyond the arc, shooting only 25 percent as EOU attempted a late comeback.

For EOU, junior Landon Jones had a team high of 18 points as well as seven rebounds. Junior Jarek Schetzle earned a double-double collecting 17 points and 14 rebounds. Sophomore leading scorer Jordan May recorded 11 points and five rebounds.

The Eagles led by more than ten points the entire first half. At times leading by more than 18 points, the Eagles ended the first half with a three by Arturo Palacios making the score 45-26.

In the second half, the Mountaineers had their eye on a comeback to bring the score to within 10points with three minutes left to play.  At 78-71 with just over a minute of competition left, junior Said Hersi drained a three from just outside the arc, closing the gap to 78-74. With four points to tie the game, the Eagles had a five-point run before eventually ending the game with a ten point lead at 86-76.

The Mountaineers continue their road trip, playing Evergreen Saturday at 7:30 p.m. in Olympia, Washington.
