Men’s Basketball Suffers Tough 93-86 Overtime Loss at Multnomah

PORTLAND, Ore. – A thrilling back-and-forth game ended in defeat for the Eastern Oregon men's basketball team, falling 93-86 to Multnomah in overtime Friday night in Cascade Collegiate Conference play.

Junior Landon Jones posted a career night with 20 points and 19 rebounds, but it was not enough as the Mountaineers (10-9, 5-3 CCC) lost a heartbreaker on the road.

With just six seconds remaining in regulation, sophomore Peter Hamilton knocked down a clutch jumper from just inside the arc to pull EOU ahead 74-73, while drawing a foul. At the free-throw line, Hamilton calmly sunk the free attempt to give the Mounties a two-point lead.

After a Multnomah timeout, the Lions drew up a play to get Brett Blackstock to the basket, converting a layup as time expired to send the game to overtime 75-75.

In the extra frame, the Lions (11-7, 4-4 CCC) broke out with 18 points, shooting a blistering 7-for-9 from the field and 4-for-5 from behind the arc in just five minutes, claiming the 93-86 victory on their home court.

The Mountaineer defense played well nearly all game, limiting the Lions, who averaged over 100 points a game entering the night, to just 75 points through regulation. The hot shooting Lions only made 10 three pointers on 37 attempts through 40 minutes and shot under 40 percent from the field.

Shooting efficiently through regulation, EOU's shots went cold in overtime, making 1-of-7 on three's. The Mounties did convert 6-of-6 free throw attempts, but it was not enough to grab the win.

Jones stellar night led the way as the junior played 38 minutes, taking a team-high 24 shots. Junior Jarek Schetzle scored 18 points with eight rebounds. Sophomore Jordan May played all 45 minutes, scoring 15 points with nine rebounds and three assists.

Freshman Zane Wright added 13 points in 15 minutes on the floor, sophomore Peter Hamilton had 10 points and redshirt freshman Kobi Gardea had a team-high six assists. Senior Peter Eke also pulled down nine rebounds with five points.

Multnomah got a big night from their star guard Justin Martin, who had 30 points and 10 assists. Martin caught fire in the second half after recording just two points through 20 minutes. Martin was supported by Andy Brown's 22 points and eight rebounds off the bench and 20 points and eight boards from Ben Grandle.

The Mountaineers, who are receiving votes in the NAIA Top-25 Poll, visit Warner Pacific on Saturday at 7:30 p.m. in Portland. The Knights are also receiving votes in the poll and, like EOU, are trying to jump back into the top-25.
