Men’s Soccer Ends Road Trip with 1-0 Shut Out of Ottawa

SURPRISE, Ariz. – A penalty kick goal by senior Carlos Solorio in the 74th minute broke a scoreless tie and sent the Eastern Oregon men's soccer team to a 1-0 road victory, Monday morning over Ottawa (Ariz.).

The Mountaineers (2-1-1) finished the road trip undefeated in three matches with a 2-0-1 record and a 5-2 advantage in goals.

"Our guys had a tough weekend, but it was a well-deserved win against Ottawa," said head coach Zach Mills. "The guys fought hard and played smart, staying together throughout. We are pumped to leave Arizona unbeaten."

After back-to-back corner kicks by Solorio, the Mounties drew a foul in the box that set Solorio up 12-yards out for the penalty kick. The senior made the most of it, burying it past the Ottawa keeper into the top-right corner of the net. Solorio's goal on Monday was his team leading third of the season, all within the past three matches.

The teams battled back-and forth in the first half, with Ottawa holding a narrow 7-6 advantage in shots. The Mounties took momentum in the second half, outshooting the Spirit 9-5 and 15-12 for the match.

Senior keeper Aidan Wright made seven saves for his first shutout of the season, working all 90 minutes.

Senior forward Elvis Pavon led the team with five shots, three on goal. Solorio and senior midfielder Josh Goodman each had four shots.

The Mountaineers will have some time off before returning to the pitch on Sept. 14. The Blue and Gold will face Providence for the first Cascade Collegiate Conference match of the year at 1 p.m. Mountain time in Great Falls, Montana.
