Ebel's Bicycle Golden Goal Tops Providence in OT

GREAT FALLS, Mont. - The Eastern Oregon men's soccer team went on the road Friday to Great Falls, beating the Argos 2-1 in overtime, thanks to an 86th minute goal and a golden goal bicycle kick.

"I'm so proud of my guys for keeping composure," head coach Zach Mills said after the game. "We were outplaying them, and I know my guys felt it coming. We made our first conference match a very exciting game, and I appreciate my guys working hard until the end."

The Mountaineers (3-1-1, 1-0 CCC) controlled the pace for the majority of the match, but found themselves behind late. A strike from senior forward Carlos Solorio in the 86th minute from the top of the box tied the game at one, his fourth of the season, sending the match into extra time. In the 2nd minute of overtime, freshman forward Michael Ebel netted his first collegiate goal in his Mountaineer debut, a bicycle game-winner for the Mounties.

EOU had more looks on goal than Providence, out-shooting the Argos 17-4 in the match. In the first half, the Blue and Gold went into the locker room down 1-0 despite recording nine shots, compared to Providence's one. Providence capitalized on their single shot, tallying the first goal of the match in the 24th minute, bouncing off the cross-bar and in.

The Argos couldn't continue to hold off the EOU attack, as Mountaineer chances started finding the net. The clutch goal by Solorio set up the opportunity for a game-winner in OT, and Ebel, the hometown kid from La Grande, was able to make it happen.

Solario led the offense with six shots, while freshman Connor Young tallied five shots of his own. Solario's goal was assisted by junior Jacob Thielke.

The Mountaineers continue their road trip in Montana Sunday, facing off with Carroll (1-1, 0-0 CCC) at 2 p.m. MT in Helena.
