Mountaineer Women’s Soccer Shuts Out Yotes 1-0

LA GRANDE, Ore. – The Eastern Oregon women's soccer back line dominated, shutting out rival College of Idaho Thursday night. An early goal from the Mounties proved to be all that was needed in a 1-0 Cascade Collegiate Conference showdown.

The (RV) Mountaineers (7-1-1, 3-1-1 CCC) jumped on the Yotes in the 15th minute of the match when junior Jenna Jensen poked the ball past the goalie in the middle of the box. The score was set up by midfielder Natalie Mitchell, who dished a crafty ball to Jensen after an elusive run down the left side of the field. Jensen's goal was the lone tally of the match.

"I am proud of the way our team played today. We did a great job of keeping possession and played unselfish soccer," head coach Jacob Plocher said after the win. "We need to do a better job of finishing our opportunities but all in all it was a strong performance."

The Coyotes (4-3-1, 1-3-1 CCC) have had struggles finding the net their last few times out. Thursday night's shutout gives them only one goal in their past four contests, being shut out three times. The Mounties outshot the Coyotes 24-9 in the match.

Each team had even amounts of opportunities in the first half, however, the Mounties were more threatening and had more quality looks. The best chance for College of Idaho was a shot from the top of the box that bounced off the crossbar, and was quickly cleared by the Mountaineer defense. EOU narrowly out shot the Coyotes 8-7 in the first 45 minutes, but led 5-0 in shots on goal, demonstrating the higher quality of attack.

In the second half, the physicality picked up and the majority of play happened in the midfield. The best chances for EOU came from through balls down the middle of the field. The Mountaineers played extremely well defending the box, allowing zero shots on goal for the entirety of the match. The Blue and Gold out shot the Coyotes 16-2 in the second half, eight of which were on goal.

EOU will puts its three game win streak on the line on Sunday against Rocky Mountain at 11 a.m. at Community Stadium.
