EOU Downs Whitman in Home Opener

LA GRANDE, Ore. – The Eastern Oregon moved to 4-0 on the season, sweeping NCAA Division III opponent Whitman on Tuesday night at Quinn Coliseum.
 
The Mountaineers (4-0) hit for a season-best .333 to easily take down the Blues in front of the home crowd.
 
After allowing Whitman to hit at a .353 clip in the first set, the Mountie defense stepped up to keep the Blue negative in the second and third sets.
 
The Blue and Gold had seven players record three or more kills in the match, led by junior Megan Bunn with 12. Fellow junior Hailee Ackerman posted seven kills with no errors, good for a .412 hitting percentage.
 
Junior Taylor Tibbetts, sophomore Madison Pilon and freshman Jet Taylor paced the team with three block assists each.
 
Four defenders totaled at least five digs for EOU with senior Holli Mullins accumulating 11. Sophomore Kiley McMurtrey had seven, followed by sophomore Aspen Christiansen with six and Ackerman with five.
 
Senior Sarah Carpenter totaled 15 assists to lead the Mounties, while Pilon added 12 on the evening.
 
The Mountaineers finished the night dominantly, defeating Whitman 25-10 in the third set. In the set, EOU had a 13 kills to just three errors while forcing eight errors by the Blues.
 
The match counted as an exhibition for Whitman.
 
The Mounties are back on the court on Friday at the Big Sky Invitational in Butte, Montana. EOU opens against Vanguard at 12 p.m. Mountain time, followed by Providence at 6 p.m. MT.
