Mountaineers Fall at No. 1 College of Idaho 78-61

CALDWELL, Idaho. – The Eastern Oregon men's basketball fell on the road 78-61 to the No. 1-ranked College of Idaho Coyotes on Tuesday night in Cascade Collegiate Conference play.

After dropping their previous game on Sunday, the No. 1-ranked Coyotes proved their ranking with a convincing victory over EOU. The Mountaineers were held to 37 percent shooting and just seven made three pointers as C of I led from start to finish.

Junior Landon Jones led the offense with 14 points while fellow junior Jarek Schetzle scored 12 points. Schetzle also added six rebounds while Jones finished with five.

EOU spread the ball around effectively with 10 different scorers in the game. However, the Yotes' Keun Palu-Thompson had 26 points while Matt Meyers scored 16 to keep EOU at a distance.

The Yotes did a good job defensively taking away space from leading score Jordan May, who was limited to five points after averaging 37 the last two games. May finished with seven rebounds, but was unable to find the same rhythm that made him CCC Player of the Week.

Sophomore Peter Hamilton added eight points and redshirt freshman Kobi Gardea had six points four assists and three rebounds.

The Mountaineers were not overly outmatched in any category on Tuesday night besides free throws. The Yotes got to the line 25 times, making 18 of their chances while the Mounties only got to the line nine times, converting six chances. EOU held tight in rebounds, only trailing 40-38 while making just one less field goal than the Yotes.

The game is the final counting contest of 2018 for EOU. They will visit Utah Sate on Dec. 28 in an exhibition in Logan, Utah. After the New Year, the Mounties host Evergreen on Jan. 4 and Northwest on Jan. 5 to resume CCC play.
