Men’s Basketball Battles D1 Utah State in Exhibition

LOGAN, Utah – The Eastern Oregon men's basketball team fell 84-57 in an exhibition contest at NCAA Division I Utah State on Friday night to end the 2018 season.
 
The Mountaineers (8-8) battled with the Aggies early on, keeping pace and leading 11-10 through five minutes after a layup by Peter Hamilton. After a basket by Jarek Schetzle cut Utah State's lead to 19-16, the Aggies went on a 26-10 run to end the half and lead 45-26 through 20 minutes, putting the game essentially out of reach.
 
Sophomore Jordan May led the offense with 16 points in 30 minutes on the floor. Schetzle scored 10 points with eight rebounds in just 16 minutes, but was limited by foul trouble. He also shot 4-for-5 and had two blocks, matching up well against the Aggies.
 
Freshman Zane Wright scored nine points off the bench, shooting 2-for-2 from behind the arc. Senior Peter Eke added six points, six rebounds and a block. Brock Johnson contributed with four rebounds, three steals and two assists.
 
EOU shot 34 percent for the game and 30 percent from behind the arc. After a 1-for-13 start from three in the first half, the Mounties improved greatly to shoot 6-for-10 in the second half.
 
The Aggies made nearly 45 percent of their shots, but were held to 29 percent from beyond the arc thanks in part to EOU's strong perimeter defense.
 
The Mountaineers look ahead to 2019 as they return to Cascade Collegiate Conference play. EOU next hosts Evergreen on Jan. 4 in La Grande at 7:30 p.m. followed by Northwest on Jan. 5.
