SPRINGFIELD, Ore. - The No. 20 Eastern Oregon women's soccer team defeated Rocky Mountain 1-0 Thursday evening, advancing to the finals of the Cascade Collegiate Conference Championships presented by U.S. Bank.
The win was fueled by the defense of the top-seeded Mountaineers, who allowed just seven shots and two shots on goal. Both attempts that reached the target were snagged by goalkeeper Cydni Cottrell. The junior Cottrell exemplified what made her a first-team all-conference selection this season in the clean-sheet win.
The game-winning goal for Eastern Oregon came in the 37th minute on a penalty shot. Senior midfielder Taylor Boyer stepped up to the 12-yard mark with confidence, and beat the keeper for the lone score of the match.
The Mountaineers were aggressive all night, and were able to outshoot the Battlin' Bears 17-6 in the contest. They took seven corners in the game, while conceding zero. Most of the night was spent in the EOU attacking half, much to the delight of the coaching staff. They were able to set the tone early with a dominant first 45 minutes, taking the 1-0 lead while firing 11 shots compared to the Battlin' Bears' two.
Boyer led the offense with six shots and three on goal. Freshman Mackinley Gregus had three shots on net, while junior Jenna Jensen tallied three total shots.Â
Eastern Oregon will have a day off Friday before competing in the Cascade Collegiate Conference championship game Saturday at 12:00 p.m. against Northwest University, a rematch of the 2017 final. The Mountaineers topped the Eagles 2-0 in last season's title-game on goals by Boyer and Morgan Farrington.
The Blue and Gold squared off with Northwest earlier this season in Kirkland, Washington back on October 5. The Eagles gave the Mounties a very tough test, and the match ended in a double overtime 1-1 draw.
