Women's Soccer Blows by Corban 4-1 in CCC Tournament Opener

SPRINGFIELD, Ore. – The No. 20 Eastern Oregon women's soccer team defeated the Corban Warriors 4-1 in the quarterfinals of the Cascade Collegiate Conference Championships presented by U.S. Bank Wednesday afternoon.

The No. 8-seeded Warriors started out strong and peppered shots on goal for the first ten minutes of the match, and were able to take an early lead over the No. 1-seeded Mountaineers with a score in the 10th minute. Corban fired off four shots before the Mounties were able to get anything going on offense, jumping quickly on EOU.

However, after Corban's early goal, the Mountaineers settled in and dictated the rest of the 90 minutes. EOU ended up firing off 20 more shots than the Warriors, 28-8, after giving up the first four shots. The Mounties first goal came from Offensive Player of the Year and First Team All-CCC selection Taylor Boyer, finishing one from close range in the box off a pass by Mackinley Gregus. The goal came in the 35th minute, and the game was tied heading into the break.

"We came out a little slow," said head coach Jacob Plocher. "I think having two weeks off played into that, but the goal definitely woke us up. We played a much more complete second half and it was a lot of fun to watch. We created a lot of chances and our back line played light out."

The second half was dominant from start to finish for the Mountaineers. All-CCC Honorable Mention Jenna Jensen got the goal that put the Mounties ahead for good in the 52nd minute, a strike from five yards out. There was no scoring for the next 25 minutes, until sophomore Korilynn Goller finished her first career goal for the Mountaineers in the 77th minute on a header off a corner-kick from Jensen. Newcomer of the Year and All-CCC First Team selection Gregus got the last goal of the day for the Mountaineers two minutes later in the 79th, a strike from the right side of the box.

EOU will continue on in the tournament on Thursday against No. 7-seeded Rocky Mountain, who knocked off co-CCC Champion No. 2 Carroll College on penalty kicks Wednesday afternoon. The game was scoreless through 110 minutes, but RMC was able to win the shootout 6-5 over the Fighting Saints. The Battlin' Bears will come into the contest with the Mountaineers extremely hot, winners of eight straight conference matchups, outscoring their opponents 29-4 over that span. Rocky struggled earlier in the season in conference, going on a five-game winless streak with four losses and a draw.

Kick-off between the top-seeded Eastern Oregon Mountaineers and No. 7 Rocky Mountain is slated for 4 p.m. tomorrow evening in Springfield, Oregon.
