Women's Basketball Slips to Simpson 51-46

LA GRANDE, Ore. – The Eastern Oregon women's basketball team lost to Simpson University 51-46 Saturday night, finishing their trip to California for the Simpson Classic.

The No. 7 Mountaineers (0-2) continued their struggles shooting the basketball, dropping their second consecutive game to open the 2018-19 season.

The Blue and Gold shot 32.3 percent (20-for-62) in the contest, including a meager 20.7 percent (6-for-29) from behind the arc. Not helping their poor shooting percentage, the Mountaineers were only able to get to the free-throw line twice, missing both of those opportunities.

Junior Madison Crews led Mountaineer scoring for the second straight night, recording 11 points on 4-for-10 shooting (3-for-7 3-PT FG). Senior Maren Herrud and junior Julia Hanni finished right behind Crews with eight points each. Hanni also added seven rebounds to her point total, the highest amount for the Mounties.

Simpson didn't shoot much better, finishing the night converting 41.9 percent of their shots from the field (18-for-43). However, they were able to help their cause by drawing a lot of contact near the hoop, getting to the line 18 times and making 12 free throws. 

The Redhawks had an advantage on the glass, pulling down 40 rebounds, 12 more than the Mounties' 28. However, EOU grabbed two more offensive rebounds (10) than Simpson (8). The disparity on defensive rebounds can be attributed to the shot-difference, as the Mounties took 19 more shots than the Redhawks.

Eastern Oregon played cleaner than they did a night before, cutting their turnover total from 27 to 17. They were also able to force 22 turnovers in the contest, leading to 14 Mountaineer points.

The Mountaineers will try to get back on track at home in a scrimmage with Walla Walla CC on Nov. 7, before their next regular season game against Whitman on Nov. 10 at 5:30 p.m. at Quinn Coliseum.
