Women's Basketball Notches First Win 52-49 Over Whitman

LA GRANDE, Ore. – The Eastern Oregon women's basketball team defeated Whitman College 52-49 in the Mounties home opener for the 2018-19 season on Saturday night at Quinn Coliseum.

The No. 7 Mountaineers (1-2) struggled on their opening road trip down to California, dropping two games while averaging 47.5 points per game. On top of their scoring woes, they turned the ball over 44 times in their two games. However, they were able to clean up some of their problems tonight, leading to their first victory of the campaign.

Whitman College (0-1) opened its season tonight with a tough loss, with most of their struggles stemming from poor shooting. The Blues shot 25.8 percent (17-for-66) from the field, including 16 percent (4-for-25) from three-point range, and 57.9 percent (11-for-19) from the free-throw line.

Junior Madison Crews and freshman Beverly Slater led the offense for the Mountaineers, scoring 14 and 15 points, respectively. Slater finished 5-for-10 from the field, and a perfect 5-for-5 from the charity stripe. As a team, EOU shot 32.3 percent (20-for-62) from the field, but shot excellent at the line, making 9 out of 10 attempts.

Senior Khadija Neumeyer led all players in rebounding, coming down with 13 boards. The Mountaineers grabbed 51 rebounds in the contest, nine more than the Blues' 42.

The Mountaineers bench shined in this one, outscoring Whitman's reserves 23-9. Most of that is attributed to Slater's 15 points, but senior Julia Hanni also produced efficiently with six points on five shots.

Next up for the Mounties is an exhibition match in Cheney, with Eastern Washington on Wednesday, November 14 at 6:05 p.m. EOU will then head on their furthest road trip of the season down to Texas, for a matchup with Wiley College on November 21, and a pair of games with Paul Quinn College on November 23 and 24. Eastern Oregon will not play at Quinn Coliseum again until the start of conference play on November 30 against the SOU Raiders.
