Mounties' 10-Game Win Streak Ends at No. 10 SOU

ASHLAND, Ore. – In a battle for first place in the Cascade Collegiate Conference, it was No. 10 Southern Oregon that came out ahead, defeating the No. 13 Eastern Oregon volleyball team in four sets on Saturday night.

The Mountaineers' (15-5, 10-2 CCC) incredible 10-game winning streak came to an end on Saturday against another top-25 opponent in SOU (18-2, 11-2 CCC). The winning streak was sandwiched between two losses to the Raiders, the only team that has been able to solve Eastern Oregon in the CCC.

Despite the loss, EOU stays near the top of the CCC in second place with a 10-2 conference record. Southern stands just ahead at 11-2.

The Raiders used a hitting percentage of .248 for the match while holding EOU to .144 to claim the four-set victory. The Mounties were outhit in each set, apart from the second, despite an advantage of 11-7 in blocks.

SOU had four players in double-digit kills for the night, including two players that hit over .400 from the floor in Taylor Ristvedt and Elliott Cook. Junior Hailee Ackerman led the Mounties on the attack with 12 kills, but also had eight errors for a .114 hitting percentage.

At the net, freshman Cambree Scott had five block assists and a solo block while junior Taylor Tibbetts posted four assisted blocks and two solos. Tibbetts also added nine kills.

Sophomore Madison Pilon paced EOU with 19 assists, followed by senior Sarah Carpenter with 18. Sophomore Kiley McMurtrey tallied 16 digs in the loss.

The Mountaineers had opportunities to gain momentum for the match in the first set, but fell by a score of 25-23. Trailing 20-15 in the opening set, EOU rallied back with four-straight points to make it 20-19. Later, with the score tied at 23, the Raiders claimed the first set on a kill and an EOU error.

The Mounties found themselves trailing once again in the second set, but after trailing 23-21, EOU rattles off four-straight points on two blocks and a kill by Bunn to secure the 25-23 second set victory.

The Raiders were able to easily take set number three 25-12, holding EOU to a .031 hitting percentage and just seven kills.

Set four was the most back-and-forth set of the night as it featured 15 tied scores and seven lead changes. Down 22-21, the Mounties scored two points in a row on a kill by Tibbetts and set error by SOU to go ahead 23-22 and force a Raiders' timeout. SOU rallied out of the timeout, however, answering with back-to-back kills before an Eastern error ended the set and the match.

The Blue and Gold will look to respond and begin a new winning streak next week at home, hosting Warner Pacific on Friday at 7 p.m. and Multnomah on Saturday at 5 p.m. at Quinn Coliseum. Both games will be a part of EOU's Dig Pink Breast Cancer Awareness Weekend, as fans are encouraged to wear pink.
