Men's Basketball Falls to UC Merced 74-76

VALLEJO, Calif. – The Eastern Oregon men's basketball team dropped the first game of the Frank Dye Classic 76-74 to UC Merced on Friday night.

The Mountaineers (2-2) have dropped two straight games after opening their season with two victories. They shot 40 percent from the field, and 33 percent from three-point range in the contest.
UC Merced (1-0) got the victory in their season opener, narrowly edging out the Mountaineers. It was a tightly contested game that either team could have taken, but ultimately the Bobcats came out ahead. Eastern Oregon had a chance to tie the game at the free-throw line with little time left, but would come up just short.

74 points is a season-low for an EOU team that is averaging over 100 points per game so far this year. The leading scorers were Zane Wright with 16 and Joel Anderson with 15. Anderson excelled at the foul line, making 11 of his 13 tries.

As a team, the Mountaineers shot efficiently at the charity stripe. They finished 22-for-27, or 81.5 percent. The bench contributed in a big way, recording 36 points. EOU also controlled the boards, tallying 41 rebounds compared to the Bearcats 33.

The back-and-forth game on Friday night featured 16 tied scores and 14 lead changes. Neither team led by more than six points. 

EOU will look to get back on track tomorrow night against California Maritime in their final game of the Frank Dye Classic. Tip-off is set for 7:30 p.m. in Vallejo. After the contest, EOU will stay in California to play Pacific Union on Sunday at 1 p.m. in Angwin.
