VALLEJO, Calif. – The Eastern Oregon men's basketball team lost to Cal Maritime 71-80 in their final game of the Frank Dye Classic Saturday night.
The Mountaineers (2-3) dropped both of their games in the tournament, and have lost their last three overall after starting 2-0. In their two wins this season, EOU is averaging 119.5 points per game, and in their three losses they are scoring 78 points per game.
Cal Maritime (2-0) held their home court in both of their tournament games, winning by an average of 9.5 points per game. Their big three of Josh Hauser, Zavier Lucero, and Ben Borja combined for 64 of the Keelhaulers 80 points.
Eastern Oregon shot 37.8 percent from the field in the contest, and 37.5 percent (6-for-16) from behind the arc. Guard Joel Anderson was the leading scorer, finishing with 16 points and two rebounds. Said Hersey recorded 13 points, and Jarek Schetzle scored 12.
The Keelhaulers outplayed the Mountaineers in just about every category. The Mountaineers were outrebounded 28-48, and turned the ball over 14 times compared to Cal Maritime's 12. Maritime also was able to spread the floor and find their teammates more efficiently than EOU, tallying 17 assists. The Blue and Gold were only able to produce 10 assists as a team.
EOU will play again Sunday night in Angwin, California before returning home. Tip-off is set for 1 p.m. against Pacific Union, who lost their only game this season 77-102 against William Jessup University.
