Mounties Lead Start to Finish in 82-66 Victory at Northwest

KIRKLAND, Wash. – The Eastern Oregon men's basketball team won its fourth-straight game led by 23 points from sophomore guard Max McCullough, defeating Northwest 82-66 in Cascade Collegiate Conference play on Saturday night.

The win advanced the Mountaineers to 14-3 overall and 6-3 in the CCC. After dropping their first two CCC contests, EOU has won six of the last seven. The 16-point victory over Northwest (8-10, 2-6 CCC) is the team's largest of the season in the conference.

The Blue and Gold never trailed in the game and were last tied with the Eagles just a minute and a half into the contest at 4-4. The team held a double-digit lead the entire second half, going up by as many as 20 points at 9:57 left in the game. The Mounties were consistent offensively, scoring 41 points and shooting over 42 percent in each half.

The conference's leading scorer, McCullough had his ninth 20-point game of the season with 23 points. The sophomore was nearly unstoppable when driving to the basket, finishing 10-for-17 from the field while adding eight rebounds.

Senior guard Cole Ashby and junior forward Peter Eke each recorded double-doubles for the Mountaineers. Ashby finished with 10 points and 11 boards while Eke put up 11 points and rebounds, with seven on the offensive glass. A night after scoring 29 points, freshman guard Jordan May had 19 more. Senior wing Austin Winegar was the one of five players in double-digit points, adding 10 with five rebounds.

Tre Benton led the Eagles with 19 points and seven rebounds, but was the lone player for Northwest with 10 or more points. The Mountaineer defense stifled the Eagles to 36 percent shooting and just 5-for-26 from behind the arc.

The Blue and Gold return home with a four-game winning streak, hosting Multnomah on Friday and Warner Pacific on Saturday. Tip off from Quinn Coliseum on both nights is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
