Mountaineers Find Way to Win 5th Straight 96-90 Over Multnomah

LA GRANDE, Ore. – It wasn't easy, but the Eastern Oregon men's basketball team (receiving votes in the NAIA Top-25 Poll) pulled out a 96-90 home victory over Multnomah on Friday night in Cascade Collegiate Conference play at Quinn Coliseum.

The win gave the Mountaineers (15-3, 7-3 CCC) their fifth-straight win and moved the team into a tie for third place in the conference. The Mountaineers were forced to rally in the game, trailing by as many as nine points in the first half. However, a back-and-forth second half set up for a riveting finish.

The game featured 11 lead changes and nine tie scores as both teams came up with big shots down the stretch. The Mounties came up with just a few more in the end though, using a late seven-point run to take an 88-83 lead, which they would never relinquish.

The three-headed attack of Max McCullough, Cole Ashby and Austin Winegar led the offense in the first half that needed every bit of it as the Lions scored 51 first-half points. Winegar had 15 points in the opening 20 minutes of the game, followed by 14 from McCullough and 11 from Ashby. The trio made up for 40 of the team's 49 first-half points.

In the second half, the trio continued to perform well, but received an offensive and defensive boost from freshman guard Jordan May and senior guard Brennan Pope. After scoring 0 points in the opening 20, May put up 15 points in the second, using smart defensive plays for a few easy baskets on fast breaks. Pope came into the game and scored six points and had four rebounds while drawing offensive fouls from the Lions on multiple occasions.

McCullough finished the game with 26 points, six assists and five rebounds, shooting 12-for-22 from the field and nailing a few big shots down the stretch. Ashby posted 19 points with four three-pointers, adding five assists. Winegar had 19 points and a team-high eight rebounds. May scored 15 points and made all four of his free-throws in the final seconds to ice the game for EOU.

For the Lions (4-13, 1-7 CCC), Brett Blackstock was nearly unstoppable, posting a double-double of 26 points and 12 rebounds. The junior shot 10-of-15 from the floor and 6-of-8 from behind the arc. Darius Redrick had 15 points and Ben Grandle had 14 despite being in foul trouble and eventually fouling out in the second half.

The Mountaineers will be tested on Saturday night, hosting No. 16-ranked Warner Pacific with tip off at 7:30 p.m. from Quinn Coliseum.
