Men’s Hoops Upsets No. 16 WPC with 22-Point Comeback

LA GRANDE, Ore. – Senior guard Cole Ashby drained a go-ahead three pointer with 24 seconds left and the defense held on as the Eastern Oregon men's basketball team upset No. 16 Warner Pacific College 82-79 on Saturday night at Quinn Coliseum in Cascade Collegiate Conference.

With the score tied at 79 apiece, the Mountaineers (16-3, 8-3 CCC) moved the ball around before Ashby was found with an open look from behind the arc, nailing his fifth three-pointer of the night. The shot was a part of an incredible second half for the Mounties, who outscored Warner Pacific (13-6, 8-3 CCC) 49-29.

Entering the week, EOU began receiving votes in the NAIA Top-25 Poll and earned its first win over a top-25 team on Saturday night. The win is the sixth in a row for the Mounties who have also won eight of their last night conference games.

The Blue and Gold trailed by as many as 22 points after an 11-point run by the Knights with 4:25 to play in the first half. A couple late baskets for the Mountaineers helped to cut into the deficit, but they still trailed 50-33 at halftime. The Knights seemed to be well in control, shooting over 51 percent and limiting the Mounties to 3-for-13 from behind the arc.

The second half was a completely different story as EOU found their shooting stroke, making 8-of-18 attempts. Ashby led the comeback with 23 points while senior wing Austin Winegar and sophomore guard Max McCullough each had 19 points. Winegar shot an incredible 9-for-11 from the floor.

Despite Ashby, freshman Jordan May and senior Brennan Pope playing with four fouls, the Mountaineers kept the three in the game for most of the second half as they provided the team's best chance for the comeback win. Pope came off the bench to provide six points and team-highs of seven rebounds and five assists. May dropped 12 points in 34 minutes with four assists.

While the Knights held the lead for over 26 minutes of play, the game featured eight tie scores and 11 lead changes as the final 10 minutes featured back-and-forth action from both squads.

Collin Malcolm led WPC with a double-double of 20 points and 11 rebounds while shooting 8-for-12 from the field. Xavier Cannefax had 16 points and five rebounds; Keaton Bankofier and De'Jon Bowman each had 12 points while Brandon Bell added 10 points.

The win for the Mountaineers moves them into a tie for second place in the CCC with Warner Pacific as both teams hold an 8-3 record in conference.

The Mountaineers head on the road for the next three games with a six-game winning streak, beginning with Corban on Jan. 19 in Salem, Oregon.
