Men’s Basketball Holds on in Wild Win over Corban for 7th Straight

SALEM, Ore. –  Corban missed the first free throw of a 1-and-1 and the Mountaineers swatted the rebound away with 0.4 seconds left as the Eastern Oregon men's basketball team earned its seventh-straight victory, defeating Corban 77-75 on the road on Friday night.

The Cascade Collegiate Conference rivals battled back-and-forth all night as the game featured 17 lead changes. EOU (17-3, 9-3 CCC) led 77-75 for the final 1:31 of the game, coming up with big defensive stops and rebounds to maintain the two-point advantage.

With 13 seconds left, the Warriors (12-8, 6-6 CCC) grabbed a rebound off an EOU missed free throw, quickly taking it down the court. After a missed three-pointer, Corban's Joel Johnson pulled down two offensive rebounds before being fouled with 0.4 seconds left. A timeout by head coach Carlito Labarda Jr. iced Johnson as the first free throw of the 1-and-1 clanked off the iron.

The Mountaineers got standout performances from their young duo of sophomore guard Max McCullough and freshman guard Jordan May. McCullough had 23 points with 19 in the first half, while May posted 22 points with 10 in the second half. Senior wing Austin Winegar stepped up in the second half with some big plays including 11 of his 14 points. Senior guard Cole Ashby finished with 11 points.

In the final 1:31 when neither team scored, Winegar played a major role with his play. The senior came up with a block on an easy layup for the Warriors with 42 seconds to play and then had an offensive rebound on EOU's next possession with just 17 seconds left, forcing Corban to foul.

The Blue and Gold went to the free-throw line just seven times, but made their shots from the field count, shooting 47 percent overall and 62 percent from behind the arc. The Mounties hit 13 three pointers while holding Corban to 26 percent from long range.

Receiving votes in the NAIA Top-25 Poll, the Mountaineers continue to roll on with a 9-3 conference record, sweeping Corban in the season series. It was another tight finish for EOU on Friday night, making it their fourth conference win by three or less points.

Corban's Caleb Dozier had a strong two-way game with 15 points and 15 rebounds. Jett Sobotta added 14 points for the Warriors.

The Mountaineers stay on the road facing another challenging conference opponent in Northwest Christian. Game time on Saturday is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. from Eugene, Oregon.
