Men’s Basketball Leads From Start to Finish, Wins 8th Straight

EUGENE, Ore – The Mountaineers men's basketball gained the lead 12 seconds into the game and never lost it defeating Cascade Collegiate Conference rival Northwest Christian 92-83 on Saturday night.

Sophomore guard Max McCullough led the way with 36 points on 10-of-22 shooting, while freshman guard Jordan May helped him with 25 points on 10-of-19 shooting. The Mounties shot 52.4% from the field and 44.4% from the three-point line to extend their winning streak to eight games.

The Mounties (18-3, 10-3 CCC) started the game on an 8-0 run with back-to back layups and defensive stops. The Beacons (8-11, 4-8 CCC) got their first points three and a half minutes into the game. Michael Loomis was the top scorer for NCU, scoring 22.

The Mounties never seemed out-of-control after gaining the lead in the beginning of the game. EOU increased its advantage up to a game-high 18 points with less than a minute to go in the first half.

In the second half the Beacons tried to stop the explosive Mounties' offense with a full-court press, but the Mounties adapted to it and protected the lead.

The Blue and Gold was almost perfect at the free-throw line, shooting 14-of-16. The Mounties high free-throw percentage stopped the Beacons from playing physical defense. McCullough was clutch, as always, scoring 16 of his 36 points in the final five minutes of the game. The sophomore was 11-of-12 at the free-throw line.

The Mounties remain on the road for a mid-week contest in Caldwell, Idaho. On Wednesday, they visit Cascade Conference opponent College of Idaho, in the I-84 rivalry game at 7:30 p.m.
