No. 7 Mounties Win 14th-Straight in 69-61 OT Thriller at No. 15 NCU

EUGENE, Ore. – The No. 7 Eastern Oregon women's basketball team came away with a thrilling 69-61 overtime victory at No. 15 Northwest Christian, extending the team's winning streak to 14 games on Saturday in Cascade Collegiate Conference play.

Northwest Christian's (15-3, 8-3 CCC) Morgan McKinney had the chance to win the game at the free throw line for the Beacons with six seconds left in regulation, but she missed her second free throw. In the final possession, EOU (20-2, 13-0 CCC) missed the potential game winning triple and the game went to overtime.

It was all Mounties in the overtime period, however, controlling the pace with their experience to outscore the Beacons 11-3. Seniors Mariah Swanson and Reece Bauer each had four points in overtime to lead the Mountaineers.

Senior guard Payton Parrish led the team with 16 points on 50% shooting, while senior forward Stormee Van Belle followed her with 15 points and seven rebounds. The Mounties had difficulty with Beacons' center Anamaria Virjoghe until she fouled out in overtime. She finished the game with a game-high 21 points.

It was a low-scoring game for both teams as they both shot below 40% from the field and under 30% behind the three-point line. The biggest lead of the game was 11 points for EOU.

Both teams came out slowly in the first half in Eugene as they struggled on the offensive end. The Mounties shot 33.3 percent while Northwest Christian shot 26.7% from the floor.

Parrish led the Mounties in the first half with seven points. Junior guard Maren Herrud and senior guard Jessica Sexson both had five. Even though it was a close half, the Mounties never lost the lead in the first 20 minutes after gaining it just 36 seconds into the game.

The second half was an absolute thriller. The Mounties got into foul trouble in the third quarter with Van Belle picking up her fourth and Swanson picking up her third foul. The Beacons never went away in the second half though and even got the lead with 02:59 to go in the game. The Mountaineers stayed calm and collected in the final minutes, however, to force the overtime.

The Mounties next remain on the road for a mid-week contest. On Wednesday, they visit Cascade Conference opponent College of Idaho in the I-84 rivalry game at 5:30 p.m. in Caldwell, Idaho.
